People of many faiths in the US feel called to serve and protect the vulnerable as a core part of their religious ethos. In this spirit of service and solidarity with the marginalized, KC Welcome Alliance joins like-minded volunteers from various faith traditions in the KC metro area with the goal of welcoming temporary immigrant and asylum seekers into our community and assist them to their final destination here in the US, their sponsor's home.
KC Welcome Alliance is a volunteer organization that offers hospitality to immigrant and asylum seekers who have been vetted by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the FBI and sent to KC. These guests to our city arrive with official papers stating that the holders are free to move about in the US until they take the next steps in their legal immigration process.
Upon their arrival in KC, KC Welcome Alliance, through the help of dozens of volunteers, welcomes our guests with open arms. We conduct medical screening and provide them
with meals, clothing, and overnight accommodations. We also assist
them with making travel
arrangements to their final
destination—their sponsor's
home—generally located
throughout the US.
“When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt : I am the LORD your God.” Leviticus 19:33-34
“I think the story about volunteers - from all types of organizations and faiths - is an incredible story to share. I have been involved in helping undocumented immigrants for years and was very moved and encouraged to see such a large group of people sign up for long hours and intensive work. I think for a long time Kansas City - due to its location and other historical/demographic characteristics - has not seen itself as part of the United States immigration conversation. Engaging in activities like this shows that we all can have a role to play and that migration and the policies around it impacts us all.”
